Elon Musk and the team behind his OpenAI project have revealed they are trying to build a robot that can carry out normal household chores.

They also have a goal of developing AI that can understand normal language to complete tasks, and ask questions if it needs further information.

Another target is to create a single agent that can learn to play and solve many different games. They said they had been inspired with this goal by the work of Google’s DeepMind project, which made headlines in March after beating Go champion Lee Sedol with their AI program AlphaGO.

The open source project is an attempt to hugely advance AI in the coming months and years with large amounts of funding and help from organisations and individuals including Musk — so they don’t have to worry about making money.

The goals were revealed in a blog post from OpenAI sponsors Musk, Sam Altman, and Greg Brockman, as well as project research director Ilya Sutskever.

Another objective for the team is to create a metric which can accurately measure their progress as they try to complete the goals above.
